Public Input Opportunities

Public engagement was a significant component of the Destination 2055 MTP development process. Investment decisions cannot be based solely on performance numbers and the efforts of the MPO/TPO staff and policy boards. Public engagement elicits the input of a variety of stakeholders and residents to help create a broader-based plan, and the engagement process for Destination 2055 MTP provided an opportunity to build credibility and public support for the adopted plan.

The fully compiled final report, along with the related Air Quality Conformity Determination Report, is available on the Final Plan webpage.

Key Decision Points

There were four key decision points in the Destination 2055 process that included public engagement activities:

1 Vision, Goals & Objectives

Alternatives Analysis

Preferred Option Review

Destination 2055 Adoption

Each step within the Destination 2055 process included opportunities for members of the public to engage and provide input to decision makers. Engagement throughout these several stages allowed members of the community to provide input and see how their comments made a difference in the final plan update.

Step 1 – Vision, Goals and Objectives engagement concluded Jan. 2024

Step – Alternative Analysis engagement concluded May 2025

Step – Preferred Alternative Review (concluded Nov. 2025)

The 2055 update selected a “preferred alternative” based on the alternatives analysis that was completed.  Costs and possible land uses will determine which projects are selected and programmed over the next 30 years.

For both MPOs, the Draft Destination 2055 Projects and Programs lists are a major output of the Preferred Alternative phase. Based on fiscal analysis conducted during the summer of 2025, draft project lists and their associated maps identifying the programming of the region’s future transportation investments were produced.

  • The public comment period for TWTPO’s draft projects closed on October 11, 2025.
  • The public comment period for CAMPO’s draft projects and programs closed on November 18, 2025, with a public hearing on November 19th. Memo: CAMPO public engagement summary

Step – Destination 2055 Adoption (concluded Feb. 2026)

The adoption of the final plan is the final public review and gives everyone an opportunity to see how all of the pieces have come together. Adoption actually occurs through a two-part process.

  • Part One: In October, for the Triangle West TPO, and November for the Capital Area MPO, each board adopted their respective projects and programs that make up Destination 2055.
  • Part Two: The fully compiled final document, along with the related Air Quality Conformity Determination Report, was posted for public review and comment from January to February of 2026. Both Boards adopted the final plan in February of 2026.
    • CAMPO: Final report public comment summary.
